Art, Medicine, the State and Religion Meet at “Make Your Mind About Mental Health! The mental disorders are not shameful” LAU Medical Center-Rizk Hospital honors producer Sadek Al Sabbah and star Taim Hassan for “The Family of Hajj Nehman”, the television series shedding light on schizophrenia. “Make Your Mind About Mental Health” is the title of the conference organized by the Lebanese American University Medical Center-Rizk Hospital under the patronage of the Ministry of Health and in coordination with the Lebanese Order of Physicians. This conference held in Lebanon for the first time, was a result of the remarkable feedback received by the series “The Family of Hajj Nehman” starring Taim Hassan, and produced by Al Sabbah Media Corporation. The conference was attended by Minister of Health Ghassan Hasbani represented by Mr. Joseph El Helo, the head of the Lebanese Order of Physicians Prof. Raymond Sayegh, President of the Lebanese American University Dr. Joseph Jabra, LAU Medical Center-Rizk Hospital’s executive director Mr. Sami Rizk, head of the Medical Center Dr. George Ghanem, Dr. Hadi Murad from the Medical Center who supervised the conference. The attendees also included famous Arab actor Taim Hassan and producer Sadek Al Sabah, along with distinguished guests Father Elie Sader, Sheikh Abbas El Jawhary, Dr. Jocelyne Azar and many physicians from the Medical Center, as well as media representatives and prominent socialites. The conference began with a speech by Dr. Joseph Jabra, President of the Lebanese American University, in which he praised the great efforts exerted by all the parties present, especially the LAU Medical Center-Rizk Hospital which organized this conference to raise awareness about mental related disorders that the community may often ignore. He said: “Our goal, first and foremost, is the person’s wellbeing and comfort. Today, I can’t but congratulate the Medical Center for this bold initiative, as the issue of mental illness is still considered a taboo. Therefore, we emphasize the shared responsibility between the government, the Ministry of Health, as well as clergy, and people in the fields of art and medicine to raise awareness that mental illness is indeed an illness and not a shame”. The ministry of Public Health word followed, in which Mr. Joseph El Helou representing the minister stressed the Ministry’s full support of such initiatives that shed light on mental disorders and try to correct the unfair point of view of society, saying: "Mental health surely isn’t shameful! When parents of a person suffering from a mental disorder visit us at the ministry, they feel shy as if mental illness is something to be ashamed of, that is unacceptable these days. This person needs to be surrounded by friends and family who support him constantly, as the family is like the primary caretaker that would help during the period of treatment and recovery. At the ministry, we receive patients in several centers out of 245 primary healthcare centers, most notably the Psychiatric Hospital of the Cross, and we have started covering part of the cost of treatment. We hope, in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Affairs, to be able to help parents with the cost of treatment in the near future. The ministry can be reached via hotline number 1214 to receive any necessary help.”. Afterwards, Mrs. Sarah Aoun of Jansen said: "Mental illness should not determine the fate of the patient or society's view of them, especially patients with schizophrenia which affects 1% of the Lebanese population, or about 50,000 people. It is crucial on this occasion that we draw attention to the website dedicated to this disorder: fesam24x7.com, which was founded by Jansen in order to support patients suffering from schizophrenia in Lebanon.". Then, the seminar began and was moderated by Chantal Srour who said that the meeting was unique in terms of timing. It had nothing to do with the elections and brought together various bodies that came to express their value for the human being and their health. For his part, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Sabbah Media Corporation Sadek Al Sabbah said that it is easy to draw people's attention and break in their homes through sound and image, but it is important to shake the community with content that would change perspectives and correct errors. Here lies the difference between trade and industry in art. He also pointed out that while the company torch is being passed on from the third to the fourth generation, he vows to keep producing works that reflect reality in all its details and to always be a real industry in the art world. " Dr. Hadi Murad who shared with the attendees the main reason behind the idea of this conference, which is when he saw the reaction of people with schizophrenia when they were watching Taim Hassam in the series “The family of Hajj Nehman”. Here, he got excited to gather different sectors: medical, psychological, religious and artistic all in one place, to discuss mental illness and its impact on society. The conference also addressed the views of the clergy and the society on mental disorders through interventions by Father Elie Sader and Sheikh Abbas Al Jawhary that generally emphasized that religion must provide vital guidance and can thus be instrumental in helping the patient overcome their illness by believing in themselves. Lastly, after receiving questions from the audience, the Medical Center honored famous actor Taim Hassan and Mr. Sadek Al Sabah for their recent series titled: “The family of Hajj Nehman” which depicts the personality of a patient suffering from schizophrenia brilliantly and distributed trophies as a token of appreciation to these speakers.
