A lecture was held at our medical center titled “Why We Need Doctors Who Are Generalists?" By Emeritus Professor Graham Watt, MBChB, MD Professor of General Practice and Primary Care from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, UK The Objectives of this Lecture are: · To consider what is meant by the “clinical generalist role" · To compare and contrast the roles of generalist and specialist in health care · To consider the “exceptional potential of family medicine” Dr. Graham Watt is Emeritus Professor at the University of Glasgow where he headed the Department of General Practice (Family Medicine) and Primary Care for 22 years, leading developments in medical education, the epidemiology of health and disease in families and research on inequalities in health care. He graduated in medicine from the University of Aberdeen in 1976 and gained training and accreditation in epidemiology, public health and general practice. He is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the UK Academy of Medical Sciences. He is currently writing/compiling a book called “The exceptional potential of general practice”, based on his experience of working with general practitioners serving very poor areas (“GPs at the Deep End”), and including nearly 50 co-authors from around the world. Dr. Watt is a Trustee of the UK charity Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) and is visiting Beirut as chair of the steering group of the Lancet Palestinian Health Alliance, on the occasion of its 9th annual conference. Professor Watt is introduced by Dr. Khairat Al-Habbal, Clinical Instructor at the LAU Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Family Medicine.
