Welcome to the Anesthesiology Clerkship—one of the most dynamic and hands-on experiences of your medical education! As you step into the OR and beyond, you’ll enter a world where precision and quick thinking converge to keep patients safe and comfortable during some of their most vulnerable moments.
Anesthesiology is more than pharmacology and physiology—it’s about managing critical events, relieving pain, and leading calmly under pressure. Whether you're considering this field as a career or simply looking to strengthen your clinical foundation, this rotation is designed to be immersive, interactive, and transformative.
Throughout your time with us, you’ll gain technical skills, explore the art and science of perioperative care, and collaborate closely with our dedicated team of anesthesiologists, residents, and nurse anesthetists. From simulation labs to bedside care, we’ll challenge your thinking, support your growth, and celebrate your progress.

Your First Day: Orientation & Simulation Session

Your clerkship begins with a dynamic orientation and hands-on simulation session, ensuring you step into the OR with confidence. Since day1, you'll be introduced to the rotation structure, expectations and key principles of anesthesia. Through interactive workshops, you’ll practice IV insertion, LMA insertion, endotracheal intubation, oropharyngeal airway insertion and bag-mask ventilation, preparing you for real-life clinical encounters.

Structure & Rotations

This four-week clerkship provides immersive training across two medical centers:

3 weeks at LAUMCRH
1 week at LAUMCSJH

You'll rotate through diverse clinical settings, including the operating room (OR), pain management unit, pre-anesthesia unit (PAU) and non-operating room anesthesia (NORA), gaining exposure to various anesthetic practices.

Curriculum & Learning Objectives

This rotation is designed to build your knowledge, skills, and clinical decision-making in anesthesiology. Key learning objectives include:

Physiology & Pharmacology relevant to anesthesia
Pain Management & Preoperative Evaluation
Anesthetic Planning & Airway Management
Postoperative Care, Patient Safety & Ethics
Critical Thinking, Professionalism & Decision-Making

Educational Strategies

Didactic Learning: Engaging, interactive sessions emphasizing critical thinking and core anesthesiology topics

Simulation-Based Learning: Starting Day 1
Clinical Training
- Preoperative assessment
- Intraoperative patient monitoring
- Postoperative management
Hands-on experience performing key procedures:
- IV insertion
- Airway management
  - Endotracheal intubation (ETT)
  - Laryngeal mask airway (LMA) placement
  - Ventilation & oral airway management
Spinal anesthesia

Oral Presentation & Award

You'll have the opportunity to present a case or topic of interest and the chance to win the Best Oral Presentation Award with an official certificate recognizing outstanding contributions.

Assessment & Evaluation

Your progress will be assessed through a combination of formative and summative evaluations:

Formative Feedback: Continuous guidance to help you improve
Summative Evaluation:
- Based on Clinical Performance Evaluation (CPE)
- End-of-Rotation quiz to consolidate your learning
Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) for hands-on competency

Your anesthesiology rotation is guided by a team of dedicated and passionate physicians who are here to support, challenge, and inspire you. With expertise spanning perioperative medicine, pain management, critical care, difficult airway management, regional, cardiothoracic, vascular, pediatric and neuroanesthesia, they are committed to making this rotation an engaging and enriching learning experience.
Led by Dr. Vanda Abi Raad (Chairperson), our faculty includes Drs. Bassam Gerges, Hanane Barakat (Program Director), Caroline Chahine, Micheline Bou Khalil, Krystel Malek, Rony Al Nawwar (Clerkship Director), Georges Assaf, Carole Serhal, Sandra Elias, Charbel Gerges, Samantha Sukkar and Leila Eid, at LAU Medical Centers (Rizk Hospital and Saint John Hospitals). Outside the OR, they are coffee lovers, avid travelers, musicians, foodies, and nature enthusiasts—so don’t hesitate to connect and learn from their experiences.

This rotation is not just about mastering techniques but also about teamwork, adaptability, and building professional relationships.
