Scheduling your first mammogram can feel a little intimidating, but it is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your breast health. A mammogram is a specialized X-ray that allows doctors to detect breast changes, sometimes years before they can be felt. At LAU Medical Centers, our team is dedicated to making the experience as comfortable and reassuring as possible. Here is what you need to know before your appointment.
Why Mammograms Matter
Breast cancer is most treatable when found early. Regular mammograms can spot tiny tumors or changes in breast tissue that may not be noticeable during a self-exam or routine checkup.
For most women of average risk, experts recommend starting annual screenings around age 40, though your doctor may advise earlier or more frequent tests based on family history or other risk factors.
How to Prepare
A little planning can help the process go smoothly:
- Schedule wisely. Try to book your mammogram during the week after your menstrual period, when breasts are usually less tender.
- Skip deodorant and lotion. On the day of your exam, avoid deodorant, antiperspirant, powders, or lotions on your chest or underarms. These can appear as white spots on the X-ray.
- Wear a two-piece outfit. You will need to remove your top, so a separate shirt and pants or skirt is more convenient than a dress.
- Gather your information. Bring a list of past surgeries, prior mammograms, or any breast symptoms you have noticed. If you are coming from another facility, arrange to have your previous images sent to us for comparison.
What Happens During the Exam
When you arrive at LAU Medical Centers’ Breast Imaging Center, a technologist will greet you and explain each step. You will undress from the waist up and wear a gown that opens in the front.
The technologist will position your breast on a flat surface and gently lower a plastic plate to compress the tissue. Compression might feel uncomfortable but should not be painful, it lasts only a few seconds and is essential for getting clear images. Typically, two pictures of each breast are taken from different angles. The entire appointment usually takes about 20 minutes.
After Your Mammogram
At LAU Medical Centers, a radiologist specialized in reading Breast Imaging studies will review your X-rays, compare them to prior exams, and may request additional images for clarification or complete the evaluation with an ultrasound before issuing the final report, which will be shared with your referring physician.
Remember, if anything unusual appears, it does not necessarily mean cancer.
