Cardiac anesthesiologists in the Department of Anesthesiology at LAUMC are physicians who are specialists in the care of the patient with cardiac disease undergoing cardiac surgery and other procedures on the heart and have additional expertise in heart ultrasound ("Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography", TEE). In addition to providing anesthesia in the operating room there care extents to non-operating room interventions, such as percutaneous aortic valve placement (TAVR), mitral clip procedures, closure of congenital defects (atrial or ventricular septal defects) etc…
The scope of practice also includes patients undergoing thoracic procedures such as video assisted thoracoscopies, thoracotomies etc… in addition to cardiac and thoracic anesthesia coverage the same team takes care of patients undergoing open and percutaneous vascular procedures such as arterial bypass, AV fistula creation, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, angioplasties, EVAR & TAEVAR procedures providing state of the art anesthesia
